DESCRIPTION OF CARE

George Junior Republic in Indiana provides 24-hour community based group home residential treatment services for emotionally troubled male children and adolescents, ages12-21. The home provides for a capacity of nine-ten youth who are unable to reside with their natural families due to various circumstances. The home is staffed by professional counselor parents (a married couple who resides in the home), professional relief counselor parents, night staff, and a master level treatment team coordinator who oversees the functioning of the home.

Admissions Process at George Junior Republic in Indiana photoThe staff provides a structured, therapeutic environment through counseling and a well-designed motivational system, which is of a behavioral/educational nature. Staff provides support for all community related activities in the areas of education and recreation. The youth attend the local schools and make use of local recreational facilities. The treatment team coordinator provides individual and group therapy for the youth, as well as family therapy for the youth and their families. The staff will work with the placing agency representative and the family toward the goal of family preservation and the youth’s return home at the earliest possible time (family reunification). However, if reunification is not possible, youth may participate in the Independent Living Program, designed to prepare them for self-sufficiency.

ADMISSION POLICY

George Junior Republic in Indiana is a private, nonprofit, nonsectarian program for boys without regard to race, color, or creed. The group homes in Bartholomew and Grant Counties in Indiana are designed for males, ages 12-21. The Bartholomew County home has a licensed capacity of 10 youth and the Grant County home has a licensed capacity of nine youth. Youth placed in these homes may have a number of issues or problem areas such as family, peers, school, social, or community problems. Youth may have a level of emotional disturbance and perhaps some delinquency. Youth who have a history of sexually maladaptive behaviors must have successfully completed a treatment program for these behaviors and be at a low risk to reoffend before he would be eligible for placement.

Youth not accepted may include

  1. Recent fire-setting history
  2. Physically assaultive and/or overly aggressive toward staff
  3. Suicidal or homicidal ideation
  4. History of sex crimes or perpetrator
  5. Severely emotionally disturbed/impaired
  6. Severe psychiatric/mental health issues
  7. Moderately, severely or profoundly mentally retarded

APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION

The referring agency should complete a Request for Placement application and provide any requested information, which should include any record of psychiatric/psychological treatment, previous hospitalization or placement, school records (to include immunizations), and court, probation, or Department of Child Services records.

Upon receiving the above-mentioned materials, a pre-placement interview with the youth will be scheduled by the director or treatment team coordinator. This interview may also include parents/guardians, referring worker, previous therapists, CASA or counselor parents.

Upon conclusion of the application process, the group home director will make a decision regarding the youth’s suitability for placement and will inform the referring agent of George Junior Republic’s decision regarding admission.

CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION

If the youth is accepted into placement, GJR must receive the following documents prior to admission:

  • GJR Admissions Packet
  • Individual Child Placement Agreement
  • Court Order ordering placement into GJR
  • DCS Case Plan
  • Copy of Birth Certificate
  • Copy of Social Security Card
  • Copy of Insurance Card(s)
  • Immunization Records
