George Junior Republic recognizes the role of recreation in facilitating good health and positive social interaction. Through daily involvement in numerous scheduled activities, youth learn to exercise self-discipline, build self-esteem, and place trust in others.
The primary emphasis of George Junior Republic’s recreational program is to afford each student with the opportunity to improve his attitude, character, and behavior through intramural and varsity sports, club activities, and off-campus events.
Eight intramural sports, including basketball,
baseball, softball, flag football, soccer, kickball, volleyball, and
tug of war, are designed to maximize student participation and fun in a
less 
competitive environment. However,
for students who wish to engage in interscholastic competition, George
Junior Republic supports varsity basketball and track and field teams,
as well as a junior varsity baseball team. Additionally, club
activities such as weight lifting, golfing, billiards, and equestrian
riding, provide students with opportunities to learn skills in a
quasi-competitive environment. Finally, George Junior Republic provides
a wide range of off-campus social activities, such as going to museums,
amusement parks, and professional sporting events.
George Junior Republic’s campus is equipped with a recreation complex, which houses a large gymnasium, an Olympic-size swimming pool, a racquetball court, and a fully equipped weight-training center. Additional indoor facilities which are used year round include a chapel, a student union, a movie theater, a billiards room, and four auxiliary gymnasiums. Outdoor facilities including a soccer field, a baseball field, a swimming pool, and numerous basketball courts, are used seasonally. Finally, George Junior Republic’s indoor/outdoor equestrian complex features a sixteen-stall stable with indoor/outdoor riding arenas and several riding trails.
